If you run without a thermostat it would not let the car get up to operating temperature for a long while.

Mine only appears to be running hot after I have been going down the road and have the A/c on. If I turn the A/C off, the temp goes back down after a mile or so. Speed does not seem to matter... only the A/C running. The jeep is a 2004 4.0L 5 speed. I am not the original owner but have had the jeep for more than 2 years.

The pentastar does run on the hot side for better efficiency. Also keep in mind that the coolant temperature sensor is located at the left (driver) side engine head. Coolant is pushed by the pump through the engine block (around the cylinders) then through the heads and on to the oil heat exchanger, heater core and radiator via the thermostat.
